Welker was cut a year before we drafted Sproles. Welker was cut because Marty wanted "his" guy in there...

    $38 Million for Wes F'ing Welker? :icon_shrug:

There's a prime example of having too much money and not enough brains. What was NE thinking?

If my memory serves me correctly, Marty cut him early in '04 season. I think that was Marty's gamble, as Marty controls the roster after training camp (with the exception being trades).

Regardless of who cut him in '04, that cut was what necessitated the drafting of Sproles, not the drafting of Sproles necessitating cutting Welker. (referring to an earlier post).

Oh yeah, that was a terrible overpayment. Was there any other team that would pay close to that amount for Welker?

hey i still think losing welker was a big big mistake but by the same token he hasn't exactly been the gamebreaker he was at texas tech. He's been a decent return man, a decent third receiver and a general jack of all trades. Not a spectacular player and he sure as HELL isn't worth THAT much money, i'm sorry, no way.

No special teamer should be paid that kind of cash. I don't think he would be more than a 4th or 5th WR on the Chargers. Overpaid, plain and simple. And, honestly it couldn't have happened to a better team.

Am I sensing some desperation from the Patriots? Like maybe they sense their window-of-opportunity starting to close?

    Amazing...

Sproles and Cromartie will be/are better KRs. Turner had a better record. I am a little bit confused on why the Pats are paying more for their special team KR than almost there entire special teams currently.

If it was Hester it might be worth it. However its not.

I am sure that this contract won't last anywhere close to 7 years. I'm also pretty sure that that the money is backloaded in the later years. Also you can bet there is a "poisen pill" clause in the contract. In short, the Patriots just jacked the Dolphins out of Wes Welker. It's shady, but it works.

You and me are on the same page with this one. Noone else seems to agree with me though that Sproles will be an intricate weapon when he's healthy.

I agree with you. I think most people do. Sproles was featured in magazines, newspapers, etc for being a fast guy. He can consistantly produce.

I got beraided on the chargers.com forums for even bringing up Sproles name as a player we needed this year.
I would guess about 70% of Charger fans dont think he's worth a damn, and they've made this decision after only 1 year in the NFL. drrr:icon_tease:
