They say they are open to all ideas, but let’s face it, our ASS BACKWARDS MONEY GRUBBING Politicians, all who should be exiled to North Korea or maybe even Burma, would like nothing more than to hand it over to developers to maximize their bank accounts.

That area needs to be redeveloped badly though.

Maybe that opens the door to Tsai building his arena.

It’s a goddamn eyesore and begging for a transformation that could reinvigorate the neighboring area.

It’s long overdue, if you ask me. The place is a dump.

Love our old sports arena. Best seats for any indoor event. But I'm glad we are looking to replace in the same location versus downtown.

It is but to just raze it without a replacement arena is just another notch to show what an ass backwards town we have. My fear is the politicians will sell us out and just turn it into more bullshit retail space.

There is no guarantee they will build a new arena, in fact, I think the odds are they will not.

Replace it with a 30-foot statue of Dean Spanos getting teabagged by the San Diego Chicken.

Agree, no guarantees and based on past history the corrupt city will get a kickback or other incentive to hand it over to developers who have zero interest in a sports arena or even sports for that matter. It's all about the $. So look for housing or commercial property and maybe a token park area so they can say they are beautifying the area and giving the public something they need. If they let Joseph Tsai build a sports arena I'd be shocked. That is what SHOULD be done either there or in the MV complex preferrably. This council has zero interest in making SD a major league sports town. ZERO.

This is Mayor McCheese’s final Eff You to San Diego. Get rid of the Sports Arena. He’s already a) happily chased the Chargers out of here to b) facilitate handing the MV sure to Sucker City and when that failed, c) undersold the land to SDSU. With no Sports Arena say goodbye to the Gulls, Sockers, Strike Force, and the Seals. What an utter failure he was as mayor, his only “accomplishment” will be to massively erase San Diego from the sports map. Jack Murphy is turning in his grave no doubt.

Ideally it would be a redevelopment just like occured around Petco and the gaslamp area. That is what SD needs is major league level sports facilities with the entire area redeveloped around that as the central hub. So a Sports Arena either in Midway or in MV and a pro/college Stadium or complex of stadium and sports arena in MV. Both of those areas could be transformed into something for everyone.....sports fans get their major league venues, non sports fans and sports fansk alike get their entertainment districts with clubs and nice retail shops and hotels etc etc. But the city has to sacrifice money from it's own pockets (and crooked politician paybacks) and look to the good of the community as a whole to get it done. They have to entice someone like a Joseph Tsai to develop those 2 areas by giving them a huge break on the land price in return for the development that benefits a whole diversity of folks and the city as a whole.

Unfortunately, what Fender says is the most likely outcome based on history....a few will collect large sums in order to build retail or commercial or housing and sports will just be left in the dust. They never consider the value that sports teams bring to a community....ie a spirit of coming together to take pride in the achievements of the team for the community. Sports are an indispensable diversion from the stress of city life and the life in general and there is no monetary value that can be placed on that. Oh and BTW the Sports Arena if done correctly and with all the modern amenities, is not just for sports but for enterainment of all varieties from music to rodeo to motocross etc etc etc.....it's not just for sports fans. But the idiots in the council making these decisions for everyone don't care about that , they care about their own pocketbooks and those of their buddies who they are paying back for whatever favors they've been given in elections or otherwise.
