This is a sampling of the Algebra test I took yesterday-

2x^2+ 3x-5=0

This quadratic equation must be solved by factoring.

My solution follows:

2x^2-2x+5x-5=0
2x(x-)+5(x-1)=0
(x-1)(2x+5)=0
x-1=0 or 2x+5=0
x=1 or 2x=-5
x=-5/2

So, CCG, Thumper, Trumpie, anya y'all math gurus, tell me if I did wrong!!:)

2x^2+3x-5=0 ==> (2x+5)(x-1)=0

Yeah, X=1 or X= - 5/2

That is what I get as well.....damn it has been 25 years plus seeing that stuff. :tup:

Ok, the next one must be solved by completing the square.

3x^2+12x=3

My solution-

Divide both sides by 3, which leaves
x^2+4x=1
1/2 of the numerical coefficient=2, added to both sides, which leaves
x^2+4x+2=1+2
(x+2)^2=3
x+2=+/-the square root of 3
x=-2+/-the square root of 3

The next equation must be solved by the square root method-

4x^2+7=0

My solution-

4x^2=-7
2x=the square root of 7
x=+/- i times the square root of 7 divided by 2, where i = the square root of -7

Right now, I'm lookin for some software to graphically display "plus or minus the square root of 7", cuz the next problem deals wit the Quadratic Equadratic Formula.

Good! I had the best algebra teacher ever in college...he made it all seem so easy...but now I forgot most of it....:icon_eek:
Thats kinda how I feel about my instructor...this is actually a remedial course, as I didn't place high enuff on the placement exam to go directly to College Algebra. So I'm havinta start atta lower level...but the good news is, I can have this guy as my instructor all the way thru College Algebra and beyond, so I'm pretty happy about that.

When I started this endeavor last fall, I believed math was gonna be a sore point, but its actually turned into a strength.

I just got back on the net and am into my 7th beer since the last math problem..... :lol:

I will try :icon_mrgreen:

The next problem must be solved using the Quadratic Formula-

if ax^2+bx+c=0, then x=-b+/- the square root (tsr) of b^2-4ac divided by 2a.

3x^2-x-5=0

My solution-

a=3, b=-1, c=-5...sooooooo

-(-1)+/-tsr of -1 x 4(3 x -5) divided by 6
1+/-tsr of -61 divided by 6

The rest of the probs can be solving using whatever-

5x^2-10x=0 I chose to factor this equation

5x(x-2)=0
5x=0 or x-2=0
x=0 or x=2

Kudos for all your hard studying...on a Saturday!!! :)

I'm tired and just staying home today...I just got back from a vacation...why are "vacations" so tiring? Later on I'm going to the sports park to watch a fireworks show.

Again, I chose to factor this equation-

3x^3-27=0
3x(x^2-9)=0
3x=0 or x^2-9=0
x=0 or x^2=9
x=0 or x=3
Dammit!! I see a flaw in this!!

Shoulda been

3x(x^2-9)=0
3x(x+3)(x-3)=0
3x=0 or x+3=0 or x-3=0
x=0 or x=-3 or x=3

Crap!!:icon_evil:

Thanx Darlin...87!

I'm a little disappointed it wasn't mo bettah...OTOH, I need a 53 on the Finalta get a B, and a 13ta get a C.

But I'm gonna shoot for 93ta get an A!!:) :yes:

87 is pretty good....so close to an A....

Yep shoot for the 93...you might just do it! At least you know you have the B locked up.

Watch out for the LITTLE stuff...that's what usually does ya in...the little mistakes...

I prolly lost 6 or 7 points on missplaced pos or neg signs and those freakin +/- :icon_sad: :icon_shrug: :icon_huh: :no:

I know! :icon_eek: That's what I'm talking about...you can have all the complex formulas completely down and mess up on the stupid multiplication or little things because you're so worried about the BIG stuff you gloss over the little stuff....

But a B is good and you got that for sure...but you might still get the A...I love As...:)

Just be glad it's a test. You mess up the +/- in some of my projects and you'll get some very unwanted results.:lol:
