--Coach Norv Turner is anxious to keep the development of key young Chargers on the upswing. He mentioned QB Philip Rivers, WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill. "These guys have basically played one season, so to me the exciting thing is that the young players can get a lot better in terms of blocking, or running a specific pattern correctly, or making the right decision with passes," Turner said. "That is how you improve in this league, having the same guys do the same things over and over, only better."

<!-- FOXBITE -->--For the second time this offseason, the Chargers are mourning the passing of one of their all-time greats. Ernie Wright, an original member of the franchise, died of cancer on March 14. He was 67. Wright's death comes on the heels of losing DT Ernie Ladd. The AFL and Chargers Hall of Famer lost a three-year battle to cancer on March 12. According to Howard Wright, Ernie's son, his father's top salary was $78,000. "He thought that was more money than he would ever need in his life," Howard Wright said.
--Since returning from the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Turner and his staff have almost completed the playbook. "The terminology and the system is 80 to 85 percent intact," Turner said. "There are a couple of areas where we have been able to condense and abbreviate things in an attempt to make it clearer.
--Special teams dynamo Carlos Polk -- who also started three games last year when Shawne Merriman was suspended for steroids -- signed a two-year deal." This is a big move for us because we wanted Carlos to return and we were able to make that happen," general manager A.J. Smith told reporters. "Had Carlos left, depth at outside linebacker would have been a bit of a concern for us. His signing is a tremendous help in that area, plus he's a top-notch special teams player. We're thrilled that it worked out."
--The team has started its offseason workouts, which will run four days a week for 14 weeks. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I showed Philip a few pages out of the playbook, and he was surprised at how similar it was." -- Coach Norv Turner after meeting with QB Philip Rivers regarding next year's offense.
