Shaun Phillips

I read an article about Phillips being thrust into the spotlight (UT online) due to Foley being MIA for the duration of the season. I wanted to get a feel for what everyone thought about him. By seasons end, do you think he will have been an upgrade this season to Foley? An adequate replacement? Or will he tank and make us all feel like gouging out our eyeballs by seasons end?

INHO I believe that Phillips will be an adequate replacement and our D will still be solid, and while Foley will be missed I don't think this knocks us down a peg.

I just dont know what to think yet. I loved Foley as a player and as an intimidating LB for the Chargers.

phillips is faster and a better athlete but yeah Foley had incredible power and was just a mean mutha in the passing game.

I think Phillips will hvae more sacks, and will cover better, but the team will have lost a leader and a source of energy

The only one close to abusing the tackling dummy as much as Foley was Merriman, lets not underestimate the impact losing the original Manster will have on our D.

I guess this pretty much solidifies Merriman place as the new leader of the D.

I'm going to have to disagree, I would say that would come on Donnie Edwards (if he stays on the team that is) Jamal Williams, or maybe even McCree...Our D is comprised of veterans who are capable of leading.

i think Phillips has more natural talent then Foley (speed and even pass rush) but Foley yeah is a monster. I didn't deny that

Donnie Edwards IS NOT a leader of the team.

Williams? Maybe... the whole team respects the hell out of him, but I don't see him as someone the team would rally under.

Merriman IS that guy. He has 'it.'
Agreed.

Donna Edwards does not have the "quan factor" - "the shimmy" - "the shake" - "the quiver" --- some call it ...... "IT"

Back to Phillips, dude had 12 tackles and 3 sacks in the 3 games he started last year. If he can keep up anywhere near that level of production over a full season, we will not be missing Foley too much.

I Agree with you! We are going to need for Phillips to be somewhere along those lines during the season I believe that it is safe to say that Foley is leaving big shoes to fill. Yet, I believe that Phillips will rise to the occasion. This year, I would expect the opposition to constantly account for where Shawne Merriman is on the field at all times. As a result, this give Shaun Phillips and other players great window of opportunity to make some big plays. However at the least, I still expect Shawne Merriman to put up numbers similiar to last year.

I know Porter is not going to miss him.

His intimidation factor is one thing that will be missed. When he hit someone you could feel it thru the TV.
