SAN DIEGO ---- Linebacker Ben Leber has likely played his last game with the Chargers.

Leber will undergo surgery next week to remove bone particles from his right foot. The operation, which will be done by a specialist in Charlotte, N. C., will probably end the fourth-year pro's season.

"It seems this will be the end of it for this year,'' said Leber, who skipped Sunday's game with the Bills.

And next year? Leber will be a free agent and isn't expected back after rookie Shawne Merriman replaced him in the starting lineup four games ago.

"It's conceivable," Leber said. "I'm definitely going to keep high hopes that I am going to stay a Charger and make this thing work. But if not, I hate to think I've played my last down already without even knowing it. But it's a possibility.''

Until Merriman was drafted, Leber was an integral part of the defense. He played in 57 games (52 starts) and collected 204 tackles and 12 sacks.
