I’ve read A.J Foyt knew his way around a car.
ha yeah,,,no kidding. Now there was an A.J. that knew his shit. I used to love watching during those years......Indy cars ....would go up to Long Beach Grand Prix.....he was there and you could get a pit pass and watch them....it was always best on the non race day practice and trials.....those guys were all really accessible during those years...not sure about now. So guys like him and the Andrettis, the Unser bros, Danny Sullivan, etc were all there. Good times. I don't know who is who in that circuit or formula one anymore. I guess I'm retro lol

Hey is Michigan Intenational Speedway still the same as it was way back when? I remember going there once with a buddy in school ....it was somewhere between Detroit and Ann Arbor as I recall. Pretty decent sized oval. We went out to see an Indy Car race there. Pretty cool place. The midwest is pretty awesome,,,,,I loved my time there.....in fact it was strange coming back out to the coast and I missed things there.....it's what you are used to. Took me quite a while to adjust being back here. Now this place is starting to suck because of the # of people....it's way different than the good ol days....even here in south orange county which used to be mostly hills and an almost rural feel in the 80's is now a concrete fucking jungle and they are widening the I5 into some shithole that looks like the freeways in LA with the concrete sound barriers and huge #'s of lanes each way......eff that stuff....we are looking to get the fuck out of here once we can find a decent price somewhere where all the other californicators have migrated to and ruined the real estate market.

I don’t do NASCAR. Closest I got to car racing was Cajon speedway back in the day. Fastest 1/8 mile track they said.

I only managed to go to an in-person local speedway once, it was the one in Otay Mesa called Southbay Speedway 117, it was a field trip with the Boy Scouts. It was in the mid-70s, 1977 to be exact, the day Dan Fouts came back from his season long holdout and threw three TD passes. I brought along my little transistor radio to listen to the Chargers while watching the racing, which was fun. I liked the demolition derby the best.

Speedway 117. That takes me back. Dirt track. Tires kicking up little missiles of mud pelting people in the stands. Good Fuking times.

yeah I used to go there.....back around 1970 or so thru 1972....a guy in HS did flat track racing there and worked in my cousin's MC shop in National City South Bay Yamaha. I was into dirt bikes back then. They had sprint car races ....loved those too. When doing post grad work up in LA and living in the South Bay we'd head over to Ascot Park....that was a blast.....sprint cars and turn 1 there was deadly. SB Speedway was similar as I recall. Then later when in Irvine for a bit we had a dragstrip there close by ......totally cool going to see the big names in funny cars and A gassers and the rocket cars.....crowds were great, major cheers for the big guns. Being a gearhead fan is fun. Those guys put their lives on the line each time they go out for a run. That is something only a few are good at and capable of doing well. Mad respect for them.

Damn I wish I could drive in a demolition derby and in another car the spanos clan ....I'd fuck them up every fucking time we came to the intersection...in fact I'd turn around and go backwards and purposely do a major head on right into those mfers  :D

Or have them just run around the track while a whole field of demo derby cars chases them down in a car. Winner gets $1M.

Used to have a couple of neighbors that raced Cajon. Jim Stucky. Not sure why I remember that. He used to roll his car in front of the stands just for fun. Fuking awesome.

I’d like to see a demo derby again. Especially if the FUdeans had a car in it.

Jim Stucky sounds very familiar......was he a sprint car driver too? Somehow I think he was a fixture at SB Speedway too. Most of those guys did the whole circuit, ie Speedway 117, El Cajon, Ascot Park, and every where else including AZ , NV etc etc.....and some of those guys who were big go kart or sprint car drivers at a young age went on to be top Indy Car racers like the Unsers especially. Not sure who locally was in that dept. I wanna say Roger Ward might have been a local product.
