Padres place Estes on 60-day DL to make room for BranyanAugust 25, 2006

DENVER (AP) -- The San Diego Padres put left-hander Shawn Estes on the 60-day disabled list Friday and added infielder/outfielder Russell Branyan to their 40-man roster. Branyan was acquired from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday for minor league right-handed pitcher Evan Meek and a player to be named or cash considerations. He's expected to report to the Padres on Saturday.
San Diego manager Bruce Bochy plans to use Branyan in various roles.

"He's going to play the outfield, third base, come off the bench," Bochy said. "He just gives us a little more flexibility. He provides some power." Branyan was hitting .201 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs for the Devil Rays this season. Estes was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 6 with a strained left elbow and had reconstructive surgery in June. He pitched in one game this season, going six innings and giving up three earned runs in a 3-1 loss to San Francisco on April 5.
