2019 marks a half century for the Padres in San Diego. During Saturday’s FanFest at Petco Park the team unveiled a new logo to mark the occasion.
Here’s the team’s official explanation of the logo:
“The frame of the logo is shaped after the iconic Gaslamp Quarter sign and pays homage to the number of landmark neighborhood signs throughout San Diego, while also reflecting the distinct architecture of the historical California Missions found in the city. Gold is also prominently featured as an outline surrounding the logo along with a “50” to commemorate the club’s golden anniversary. The crown of the logo incorporates shapes reminiscent of the architectural features of Petco Park and the various arches found throughout San Diego. In addition, the Padres have modernized and refined the classic Swingin’ Friar logo to serve as the centerpiece of the design.”
The team also showed off three different 50th Anniversary commemorative patches that will be featured on their different uniforms during the season.
Despite the wet field at FanFest the Padres showed off another version of the logo, this one a mosaic comprised of photos or fans, players, coaches, and executives from the last 50 years of Padres baseball. Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman was joined by Garry Templeton, Wil Myers, the Swingin’ Friar, and the San Diego Chicken for the big moment.

But the news that might be most exciting for Padres fans is one they can literally taste. The team has partnered with popular San Diego brewer Ballast Point to come up with an exclusive Padres-themed beer. It will be available at Petco Park and at select areas around San Diego.
Padres pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on February 13. The season opener is March 28 with a 1:10 p.m. start at Petco Park against the San Francisco Giants.
