DENVER (Ticker) - Scott Williamson has not provided much good relief for the San Diego Padres. The righthander won't be providing any relief at all for a while.

Williamson, who has allowed six runs over his last three appearances, was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Padres on Saturday with a strained right elbow.
Acquired by San Diego from the Chicago Cubs on July 22, Williamson has yielded at least one run in five of his 11 relief outings with the Padres. On Friday, the 30-year-old was tagged for three runs in 1 1/3 innings of a 13-5 loss to Colorado.

The 1999 National League Rookie of the Year, Williamson also struggled with the Cubs, going 2-3 with a 5.08 ERA in 31 games. With the Padres, he is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in 11 appearances, surrendering nine runs in 11 innings.
To replace Williamson in the bullpen, San Diego recalled righthander Jon Adkins from Class AAA Portland of the Pacific Coast League. In 43 games with the Padres earlier this season, the 28-year-old went 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA.
San Diego also optioned outfielder Ben Johnson to Portland in order to create room on the roster for infielder-outfielder Russell Branyan, who was acquired from Tampa Bay on Thursday. In 47 games with the Padres, Johnson batted .252 with four home runs and 10 RBI.
