Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly wins Coach of the Year award

    Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly has won the 2018 Home Depot College Football Coach of the Year award.

    He led the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 record and the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoffs.

    The Irish will face No. 2 Clemson in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, Saturday Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. or 8 p.m.

    It's Kelly's third time winning the award. He's the only coach to win the award more than once.

    Kelly first won Coach of the Year in 2012. His Fighting Irish went 12-0 before losing to the University of Alabama 42-14 in the National Championship game.

    The wins from the '12 season were vacated in 2016 after academic misconduct by a student athletic trainer.

    He also won the award in 2009 after leading the Cincinnati Bearcats to a 12-1 record and the No. 8 ranking in the AP Poll.

    wonder if this guy will ever end up in the NFL? Most of the guys with the really elite college HC positions tend to stay there as long as they are winning and competitive.

    I don't think he'd go to the NFL. He's got it made at ND and can achieve God-like status if he can win a National Championship.

    The NFL isn’t for everybody. For every Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll there’s a Lou Holtz and Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier...

    or Bud Wilkinson. And , yeah, what happened to Saban? He went to Miami right? Bombed there. But I think I read somewhere it was more on the organization and front office and if he had another chance with a better organization he'd knock it outa the park. Of course they always say that but , damn, hell of a college coach. College is just different. Now Coryell had NO problem adjusting.....remember he went to St. Louis first, was successful there, then we got lucky and got him where he belonged and hit the jackpot. At least for offense lolz. Just wish he'd been able to find a topflight DC.....and they'd loaded up the D instead of unloading the top talent just when the team was on the cusp of a Lombardi. Gene Klein was an idiot. But his football IQ was nothing compared with his IQ in finding a replacement owner.

    Didn’t St Louis hire Wilkinson like 25 years after he retired? He went from the Otto Graham era to the Air Coryell era.

    Good memory, 15 years later, from Wikipedia:
    After retiring from coaching following the 1963 season, Wilkinson entered into politics and, in 1965, became a broadcaster with ABC Sports. He returned to coaching in 1978, helming the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football Leaguefor two seasons. Wilkinson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1969.
