I say that O'Connell wins the job.

SAN DIEGO ---- San Diego State football coach Tom Craft will name his starting quarterback Sunday after assessing how candidates Kevin O'Connell and Darren Mougey fare today in an intrasquad scrimmage at Qualcomm Stadium.

Craft has been guarding his intentions closely, careful not to reveal anything that might indicate a preference toward one or the other. He compares the competition to a down-to-the-wire NASCAR race.

"You go into one practice and you think, 'OK, maybe this guy is ready to pull away' and then the other guy goes ahead of him," Craft said. "Like a NASCAR race, a guy is leading around the turn and then the other guy looks as if he's going to take over the lead and they don't."

O'Connell gets the nod as Aztecs' QB

From NC Times

SAN DIEGO ---- The rehabilitation from offseason shoulder surgery and the sweat and grind of intense summer workouts finally produced the verdict Kevin O'Connell was seeking. The La Costa Canyon High graduate was named San Diego State's starting quarterback on Sunday.

The sophomore nosed out redshirt freshman Darren Mougey and will be the starter when the Aztecs open the football season against UCLA on Sept. 3. A key component in coach Tom Craft's decision was O'Connell's past starting experience.
