Some people are quick to point out our close losses last year and blame it on MartyBall.

Really? The truth is the opposite of that.

Let's look at those close losses in 2005 further shall we?

#1.) Season opening loss versus Dallas, 28-24.
35 passing attempts, 26 rushing attempts.
7 passes in the 3rd quarter, 12 passes in the 4th quarter.

No MartyBall on that one.

============

#2.) 20-17 loss at Denver.
23 passing attempts, 24 rushing attempts.
4 passes in 3rd quarter, 7 passes in 4th quarter.

Balanced rush/pass throughout the game and almost half the passes in the second half.
No MartyBall.

===========

#3.) 22-21 loss at home to Pittsburgh on Monday Night.

35 passing attempts, 21 rushing attempts.
12 passes in 3rd quarter, 7 passes in 4th quarter.

We passed more than ran, and most of the passes happened in the second half. No MartyBall.

===========

#4.) 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles

40 passing attempts, 20 rushing attempts.
13 passes in 3rd quarter, 12 passes in 4th quarter.

Passed twice as much as ran it. Pretty much the exact opposite of MartyBall isn't it?

===========

#5.) 23-21 loss at home to the Miami Dolphins
52 passes, 27 rushes.
6 passes in 3rd quarter, 13 passes in the 4th quarter.

Almost twice as many passes as rushes. Again, the opposite of MartyBall.

===========

Maybe Marty figured the same thing, that 4 out of 5 of those close losses last year were due to passing at least 35 times, and passing more than running it. Sometimes twice as much. Even one loss, it didn't help much to keep it balanced on the runs and passes.

This would be a nice opportunity for me to blame LT and his 3.8 YPC in 4th quarter within 1 possession situations.

What were the situations when we passed? Did we dive into the line twice and have a 3rd and 7? Did we throw mostly glorified handoffs? I think we need some more detail.

Agree, I know in the Philly loss people were complaining about LT being run right before the blocked FG.

Pitt.- D couldn't stop Bettis

Miami- weren't we down early and forced to pass?

Dallas- weren't we down also?

That wasn't the point.

People on other forums were making the false conclusion that our 5 close losses last year were due to MartyBall and an unwillingness to throw it in the second half, especially in the 4th quarter.

That is completely untrue.

Hey wait a minute, I give Marty props on having his teams prepared. My complaint is with his game adjustments. He expects perfect ball to be played no mistakes, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Marty is the PERFECT coach for a talentless team, but once you have talent he still coaches like there is no talent.

Look Sluggo presented a valid premise yet I see trash being still throw at the movie screen and the projector.

I am beginning to suspect if there is some radiation leakage from computer monitors affecting some brainwave activities in this forum. :icon_eek:

Here is my #1 gripe with Marty:

With a marginal lead (less than 7+ points) in the second half, instead of trying to stretch the field with downfield passes, he is completely happy running dive play after dive play. As the defenses we are facing put more and more people into the box, basically daring us to throw it, he does not adjust, and settles for long field goal attempts, putting more pressure on our special teams and defense to be perfect in defending a small lead. Without the benefit of a larger lead, we seem to fall victim to last minute heroics by the opposing offense time and time again.

We are 0-6 in the last 6 games settled by 4 or less, and that hurts.

What your overlooking is the most obvious. If your teams offense plays one dimensional its like handing the game to the other team cause they can set up to stop just one part of a teams offensive game. I'd have to guess defensive coordinators have loved marty over the years. NO wonder they speak so highly of him.

Philly: At the end when we had that nice FG blocked.

1st and 10 at PHI 30 (3:29) L.Tomlinson up the middle to PHI 28 for 2 yards (H.Thomas).

Timeout #3 by PHI at 03:21.
3rd and 3 at PHI 23 (3:21) L.Tomlinson up the middle to PHI 22 for 1 yard (K.Adams).
Timeout #3 by SD at 02:37.
4th and 2 at PHI 22 (2:37) N.Kaeding 40 yard field goal is BLOCKED (Q.Mikell), Center-D.Binn, Holder-M.Scifres, RECOVERED by PHI-M.Ware at PHI 35. M.Ware for 65 yards, TOUCHDOWN. 17 13

Martyball. Playing for the FG instead of playing for the TD. This running up the gut when they had been stuffing LT ALL DAY LONG.

Miami is easy. They knew the audibles. The buck stops with Marty and he didn't think to change them. He was prolly to busy pissing and moaning about the trade he didn't know about. That falls in the dumbass category.

Have to run. Will get to the other games later.

nobody wants to blame the D? our defense is disappointing... when they have to they cant stop anyone.

Trumpy, u have to be blind to not see Marty is an idiot. During games he freezes. He goes from 0 to 1. He doesnt know balance.

Rivers has the gunslinger mentality so u cant completely let him loose. Bec. the Charger fans are demented and will make Rivers life miserable everytime he has an interception or fumbles the ball.

USE TURNER!!!

Another poster came up with the root of Marty's problem, one that is not being mentioned in the "I hate Marty" posts. I can't speak for anyone else but this is my exact feeling on Marty's problem:

It just doesn't seem to me that it's as simple as Marty is always terrified of passing. He's terrified of passing at certain points in the game.

============

#2.) 20-17 loss at Denver.
23 passing attempts, 24 rushing attempts.
4 passes in 3rd quarter, 7 passes in 4th quarter.

Balanced rush/pass throughout the game and almost half the passes in the second half.
No MartyBall.

===========

===========

===========

#5.) 23-21 loss at home to the Miami Dolphins
52 passes, 27 rushes.
6 passes in 3rd quarter, 13 passes in the 4th quarter.

Almost twice as many passes as rushes. Again, the opposite of MartyBall.

===========

Maybe Marty figured the same thing, that 4 out of 5 of those close losses last year were due to passing at least 35 times, and passing more than running it. Sometimes twice as much. Even one loss, it didn't help much to keep it balanced on the runs and passes.
It is true to a point. The losses to Denver and Pittsburgh were due to not making the defensive stand needed.

Philly game they were behind for a lot of the game. On the one drive that led to the blocked FG, the playcalling could have been different. 3rd Down, I would've gone play action. 4th Down, I would've gone for it.

Miami just outplayed the Chargers.

Those stats should smack some dicks around and to refute just looks plain foolish.

two things that need improving. The offense has to stay multi dimensional for 4 quarters. Which everyone is upset about.

And the d-backfield and or prevent defense needs serious attention still.

Get those two things rearranged or fixed up and no team would have a chance against the chargers.
