Since the Chargers' 2001 draft, several facts have surfaced:

1.) They've only gotten one PAC-10 player on the first day.

That player is Igor Olshansky (from Oregon).

2.) They've drafted only one player from USC (SoCal), in any round, period.

That player's name is ILB Zeke Moreno, 5th round.

    Sorry, leisure.

3.) They've dipped into the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12 conferences at least three times each for first day picks so far.

Big Ten -- Drew Brees (Purdue), Luis Castillo (Northwestern), Nate Kaeding (Iowa), Nick Hardwick (Purdue)

SEC -- Reche Caldwell (Florida), Marcus McNeill (Auburn), Craig Davis (LSU)

ACC -- Philip Rivers(NC State)*, Shawn Merriman (Maryland), Antonio Cromartie (Florida St.), Charlie Whitehurst (Clemson), Tay Cody (Florida St.)

Big 12 -- LaDainian Tomlinson (TCU), Quentin Jammer (Texas), Terrence Kiel (Texas A&M), Ben Leber (K-State), Sammy Davis (Texas A&M), Toniu Fonoti (Nebraska)

(*) While the Chargers technically drafted Eli Manning from the SEC, the true intent was to trade and receive ACC QB Philip Rivers, so I count Rivers and the ACC as the ultimate result of that first draft day.

So, you want a guide for what the Chargers will do in the first day of the 2008 draft? Pretty much throw out any PAC-10 player, especially a USC one, from any consideration to be a first day pick by the Bolts.

Evidently, John Butler, AJ Smith, Buddy Nix, and John Spanos don't think too highly of the PAC-10 and USC in particular, for first day value for the Chargers.

Think about it. Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith, both from USC, and PAC-10, were available and AJ goes with the LSU kid who caught passes from today's #1 overall for two seasons, instead.
