I really like him as a player, I'm a little concerned that he's not actually going to help our pass rush much.
He'll probably get a lot of playing time right away, and is an ideal replacement for Shaun Phillips who we'll probably let walk next year.
i actually love this pick 3rd down passing situations shaun phillips coming from 1 side antwan barnes coming from the other side and melvin ingram having the verstility to rush from the inside .. a lot for the opposing o lines to deal with .. couldnt be more excited

He's an outstanding player, a great value and frankly I think he's the best pass rusher on the board. A guy who could've gone in the top 10 falls to us. It's a fantastic selection for the Chargers and with a coordinator like Pagano, this is a player who could become an absolute terror to opposing teams. I don't understand the hate of this, he was the best player on the board and one of the two biggest needs we had. Unless you just hate AJ Smith without purpose, then you can't fault or hate the pick.

I don't love Ingram, but I have to agree, I'm not as mad about this pick as I was about Liuget who I just think doesn't fit what we do at all.

Chargers find value, draft Ingram in first round

General Manager A.J. Smith has a vision for the Chargers' defense, he says, and he may have just added a big piece.
On Thursday, with the 18th pick in the first round, the Bolts selected South Carolina's Melvin Ingram, an athletic defensive end who projects to outside linebacker in the team's 3-4 scheme.
He wasn't meant to fall that far.
Ingram, by many analysts' accounts, was the top-rated pass rusher in the draft.
In the moments following the pick, the TV talking heads called it “a steal,” “the greatest value so far,” “the best pick of the middle of the draft.”
Time will have the final say.
Ingram, as a senior, started all 13 games in 2011 for the Gamecocks, totaling 10 sacks with six pressures. In 2010, he had nine sacks in 14 games with one start.
The 6-foot-1, 276-pounder played everywhere from defensive tackle to defensive end to linebacker in college.
Currently on the Chargers' roster, outside linebackers Shaun Phillips, Antwan Barnes and Travis LaBoy are in the final year of their contracts.
The trio accounted for 45 percent of the team's quarterback pressures last year.
To me it was more of Shock and confusion I don't hate the pick I love the value we got with this, I hope he helps take us to another level making us a feared defense
A guy who has been moved all over the place at South Carolina and can get sacks from DE, DT and OLB? Oh yeah this could be very very fun indeed for a COMPETENT DC
Also NFL.com has him graded between Keuchly and Barron I like that, I was just shocked and paid no attention to him because I thought he was long gone before we picked

In my opinion, the San Diego Chargers just made the best pick of the draft since the two top quarterbacks went 1-2.
And I’m not alone.
When the Chargers took South Carolina pass-rusher Melvin Ingram at No. 18, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper called it the best value pick of the draft.
Ingram is a top-10 player who becomes the impact defensive player the Chargers have craved. I believe he becomes an instant impact as a 3-4 outside linebacker. He is versatile and can play on the defensive line. He has been compared to James Harrison, and I think he will be a tremendous NFL player. Ingram might have fallen because teams didn’t know where to play him.
San Diego will put him on the field and watch him become one of its best players.
There is no way he should have fallen. The fact that Seattle took Bruce Irvin at No. 15 and bypassed a stellar player such as Ingram is a joke and a gift to San Diego.
Kudos to San Diego general manager A.J. Smith for staying patient and letting the board fall to him. There were reports the Chargers could try to trade up for Alabama safety Mark Barron. To me, Ingram is just as much of an impact player, who fills San Diego’s greatest need as a pass-rusher.

I love this pick actually. As much as I wanted Kirkpatrick (who was gone at #17) cause I think CB is a HUGE hole for us right now. The fact that he was picked behind the likes of Bruce Irvin to me is hillarious!!! I think Ingram is going to be a monster and if used right will be moving around the line creating mismatches...Just my opinion.
Ingram is a top 10 pick that fell based on "need" for other teams...Love this pick...Talk about dominating a conference and college football as a whole??? All American from every publication that matters...I will take that kind of guy out of the best college football conference in the world any day...Love this pick.

Melvin Ingram is arguably the best pass rusher in this draft and should allow for the Chargers to have an unbelievable playmaker at the OLB spot. He also has some creative uses in the special teams units and should contribute instantly in San Diego.

I'll mention from the moment Justin Blackmon and Morris Claiborne were taken back to back, Melvin Ingram was the #1 player on Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock board of best players available. He was outstanding as a value and as a talent.
Side note: Irvin was apparently given a first round grade by 15 teams according to Profootballweekly - i get the sneaking suspicion the Chargers were one
