Saturday evening, the Chargers’ rookies hosted a dinner for the team’s vets at a restaurant in the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego. Several hours later, Steve Foley was involved in a confrontation with an off-duty police officer, and sustained three bullet wounds. Details of the incident remain sketchy, but we know two things: One, Steve Foley is, thankfully, alive and will survive his injuries. And two, his football season is over, before it officially even got underway.
(Charger shot by off-duty officer 9/4/2006)

You can be certain that this is not how he wanted his opportunity to arrive, but the sudden and unfortunate loss of Foley for the season has thrust Shaun Phillips into the spotlight.

Phillips, entering his third season in the NFL, has up to this point been a pass rushing specialist who spelled Foley in down/distance situations that typically call for the opposing offense to throw the ball. He figures to see far more snaps now, even in situations where the run is expected.
