SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres placed shortstop Khalil Greene on the 15-day disabled list Monday after he broke his toe in Sunday's game.

Greene, 25, fractured the bone just beneath the nail after diving for a ball in the in the third inning of Sunday's loss against Philadelphia. Greene is batting .257 (86-for-335) with 10 home runs, 23 doubles and 49 RBI in 92 games.

"This is a big blow for us, definitely," manager Bruce Bochy said after the game. "Khalil was playing terrific baseball. He was one of our hotter bats. To have a shortstop go down while playing great ball is a big loss."

Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Padres, Greene has a career batting average of .262 (232-for-884) with 27 home runs, 58 doubles and 120 RBI in 251 games.

In related news, Padres general manager Kevin Towers announced the team had purchased the contract of shortstop Wilson Valdez from Triple-A Portland.

Valdez was acquired from Seattle earlier this season – after the Mariners designated him for assignment – for Triple-A pitchers Michael Bumstead and R.D. Spiehs. At the time, the Padres said Valdez was insurance against an injury to Greene.

Valdez was hitting .198 in 126 at-bats this season with the Mariners and has a .207 average over 61 major league games. He was hitting .245 in 48 games with Portland. :(
