On Deck: Cubs (14-14) at Padres (14-15) | Game 2 of 4

UNION-TRIBUNE

May 6, 2006

TV: 4 San Diego, 7:05 p.m. | Radio:1090-AM, 105.7-FM; Spanish, 860-A

Probable starters: Cubs LHP Sean Marshall (2-0, 3.45 ERA) vs. Padres RHP Jake Peavy (2-3, 4.58).

The skinny: Peavy has blown hot and cold in his first six starts. Monday in San Francisco he stopped his personal losing streak at three by allowing two runs on six hits over eight innings in his longest outing of the season. It marked the fourth time Peavy has allowed two or fewer runs and in those games Peavy has a 1.86 ERA. In his other two starts he has given up 14 runs on 21 hits in 10 1/3 innings. Peavy is 1-0 against the Cubs with a 2.50 ERA in 18 innings over three starts. Marshall, 23, is a 6-foot-7 rookie who won a spot in the rotation in spring training after spending parts of the last two seasons at Double-A or below. The Cubs are 5-0 in games started by Marshall. The Padres are 1-1 in their two starts against left-handers this year.
