PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Merriman's energy equals chaos, lots of sacks for Chargers

Associated Press
National Football League News Wire

SAN DIEGO -- Marty Schottenheimer was talking about Shawne
Merriman, the San Diego Chargers' nasty outside linebacker, when he
veered away from his trusted lineup of cliches and headed straight
for Albert Einstein.

"Shawne's just got so much size," the coach said. "What's
that, Emc? Energy equals mass times something squared. He really
hits with a wallop. He's going fast and he's got a lot of mass. And
you take mass plus speed and you have major collisions."

That might not be exactly the way a physicist would diagram
Einstein's famous equation, but it's not a bad analogy from an
ex-linebacker who was an English major in college.

The "something squared" in Einstein's equation is the speed of
light, which the 6-foot-4, 272-pound Merriman tries to reach on
each snap.

At the very least, Merriman is football's version of a rolling
blackout. His nickname is "Lights Out" because of his punishing
hits, which he celebrates by pretending to flip a light switch
that's tattooed on one forearm.

Powering in from the edge of defensive coordinator Wade
Phillips' 3-4 alignment, the second-year pro helped embarrass
Oakland on Monday night, causing his usual chaos and picking up
three of San Diego's nine sacks in San Diego's 27-0 win.

"Really, you look at it, and I probably could have had six,"
Merriman said, pointing to a few instances, including an offside
penalty, where he stopped himself. "You're always going to say you
could do a little bit better every time."

That said, Merriman ran his career total to 13 sacks in 11
starts.

Man, you'd think the Player of the Week could get a mention on HBO's Inside the NFL!! :icon_evil:
Word. That show sux balls big time..... "we think you'll enjoy this new format.... yada yada.." Yeh, like any real football fan wants to see more footage of Bill Cowturds family on sundays..... as opposed to highlights. I think the show should have MORE highlights and less of the "human" stories they love to report.

They should go back to the old reliable. Show all highlights. Talk about the next weeks games, and pick all games. They want a to do a veriety show that talks a little about football they should call it the Bob Costas self love hour.
