SAN FRANCISCO – It can happen. There can be an epiphany. A revelation. Flight has been around for a century. Rockne and Dorais studied the Wright brothers long before Neil Armstrong's gig upstairs. Footballs can be put into the air when a team has a lead. No need to cower. Be relentless. Squeeze the windpipe – especially when you have a quarterback who can get rid of it and throw it straight.

And the Chargers do, in young Philip Rivers, whose excellence is producing heaping helpings of football schizophrenia. This team still is trying to discover its offensive identity. For one week, or two, it gulps the Martyball potion, chugging an ugly, conservative, mother-hen pitch count. And then, suddenly, Rivers is Cary Grant, throwing passes at Grace Kelly.

Go figure.

My favorite part:

What to think? The Chargers visit Kansas City next Sunday and the Chiefs' brains – who haven't been very brainy of late – must be looking at tape and telling themselves: “What the hell is this?”
