Is it just me or is cancel culture getting out of hand?
I didn’t follow the World Cup and I really don’t follow soccer, but I started a thread here since it is related to Team USA.
Apparently there’s a wunderkind named Giovanni Reyna who got benched during the cup because he had a shitty attitude. He must’ve made amends because he did end up getting significant minutes in the game against Netherlands where team USA was eliminated.
Afterwards the coach, Gregg Berkhalter, was at some kind of motivational seminar as a speaker. He didn’t name names but he talked about a recent event at the World Cup where he had to lay down the law on a malingering player to straighten him out. I guess it was unsaid but understood to be Reyna he was referencing.
Reyna’s dad is pretty close to Berkhalter, and Reyna’s mom was “best friends” with Berkhalter’s wife. The families reportedly were close over the years. However the Reyna’s had heartburn over the benching and had been threatening to bring up a domestic violence incident in Berkhalter’s past which was kicking his girlfriend back in 1991. It should be said he ended up marrying this girl and this woman has been Berkhalter’s wife for 30 some odd years.
I guess the seminar was the final straw because Reyna’s mom outed Berkhalter and now it looks like his job is in jeopardy. Maybe his future as a professional soccer coach as well.
Is this fair? I don’t think so. Berkhalter went through counciling, therapy, and the woman he kicked not only forgave him but has been married to him for over 30 years. Seems like a low blow. Meanwhile their kid gets to likely be a pro soccer player, maybe a star, his trajectory on that path was not hindered by his benching during the cup. Seems like a bullshit move to just ruin this guy’s life like that.
