Burt Grossman to coach San Diego indoor football team

Burt Grossman, a top Chargers draftee in 1989, will be the head coach of the San Diego Strike Force of the Indoor Football League.
Grossman, 51, was a defensive end five seasons for the Chargers after going eighth in the draft. After he recorded 38 sacks in 72 games, Hall of Fame General Manager Bobby Beathard traded Grossman to the Eagles in April 1994 for a sixth-round draft pick.
A neck injury ended his career in 1996.
“I know that there are a lot of football fans in San Diego who are hungry to embrace a team they can call their own and be proud of, and we’re going to do everything we can on the field and in the community to give them just that,” Grossman said in a team statement.
In recent years, Grossman has been active in youth programs in San Diego.
“Not only did he prove and establish himself on the field as a player here in San Diego,” said team exec Greg Anderson, “but more importantly he’s done some incredible things in the community and he's exactly the kind of leader we wanted for the Strike Force.”
The Strike Force will play its home games at Pechanga Arena San Diego, the Midway District venue that opened in 1966 as the Sports Arena.
The team’s opener is scheduled for Feb. 22 against the Quad City Steamwheelers in Moline, Ill. The home opener is set for Sunday, March 3, against the Tucson Sugar Skulls.
