Bolts bust Blitz with Elephant

The Chargers huge formation of 2 T.E. , 1 wr , FB,TB , shifting the formation to trips tight left or splitting the TB out wide and going 4 wide clearly answered the 8 in the box issue vs the Packers , nice to see Cam Cameron coming up with some new looks to counter that defense.

Phillip Rivers quick reads and quick delivery was also a key . While Rivers has a unorthodox motion his size allows the wr to pick up the ball leaving his hand better than the shorter Brees.

I must say that while this was just a preseason game Rivers looked fantastic. I was amazed how controlled he was and how he took his shots down the field as well as hitting quick slants every time the Packers loaded up the box.

He and Jackson were really in sync with one another and the GB corners are pretty decent set. Rivers hit all of his timing come back patterns as well and with McCardell that is huge.

The real key to the Elephant look from the Bolts is the mismatch they get with the huge TE on the CB , Manumaleuna who the Chargers got in a draft day trade with the Rams looks like a great addition to the team , his blocking skills are superb and he has some great hands and he is huge.

The Packers tried to cover him with a LB and he had a field day. The big surprise in this game for me was Ryan Krause who had missed all of last season and up until this game had seen little action in T.C.

Krause sure looked like " special K " today , man he has some hands and what a mismatch on the small CB. On one of his receptions he drug a cb 5 yds for the 1st down.

On a down note Sproles injury hurts the ST units and the Chargers will have to think about that situation and watch it carefully.

I liked McNeils play for the most part especially his ability to get to the second level , he has some major wheels in that regard. Jordan had some whiffs vs KGB last night which was not unexpected as Jordan always struggles vs speed rushers and KGB is one of the best.

Nice play by Cromartie on the int , he sure out jumped Boerigter who is a pretty big wr and I bet that doesn't happen very often in the Packers T.C. in fact I bet that doesn't happen vs most CB but Cromarties skill set in that regards is why the Bolts drafted him.

He has a lot to learn but 42 inch vertical is one thing you can't teach.

Shaun Phillips OLB looked pretty darn good , he always plays faster in games guess it must be the adrenaline going. Stephen Cooper also looked real good I thought. He just keeps stepping his game up. In fact the starting defense was awesome.

Even the new kicker -offer was doing his job , Smith will have to constantly put it into the end zone if he wants a roster spot. Nate Kaeding wasn't bad on his kickoffs but Smith and wr/ gunner Greg Camarillo pinned the packers back on the 12 yd line and that was sweet especially if you remember how many times we gave up big returns last year.

Those are just a few of my reflections on the game.

the bears love to blitz
lets see how it works then
and I'd sooner say the elephant formation is a success after we stop either Blitzburg or the Orange Crush
Until then ,like Rivers' performance, let's not get overly optimistic here

Lets hope that we will not get the Lord of the Rings Return of the King analogy of the Mumakil defeat of Pelenor fields if we play teams like Pittsburghs Defense, Denvers Defense and including Baltimores Defense that can do that very thing if our elephants can not do their job well. They will need to step it up to keep the success going.

Great read!
The thing I liked the most was how Rivers was able to counter when they loaded up the Box. Being able to stand up in the pocket and find the open recv on the quick slants. His release and accuracy were phenomenal. That laser beam to VJ for the TD. Wow!

Great first start in a preseason. Now lets see how he does vs Chi which is regarded as a top D in the league.

On the TE front it sounds like Marty is thinking about playing Manumaleuna at a H-Back type of role along with Pinnock , who can also play TB . That would allow for 3 TE not counting Manumaleuna who would in effect take Sproles spot on the roster.

That would put Turner returning kicks along with a reserve CB most likely.

Be interesting to see if they look at Pinock at TB a little more if they do then clearly that would be the reason. I think Pinnock is a better receiver than Neal out of the backfield right now.

Marty loves size so don't be surprised, and Krause if he can stay healthy is a much better wr (TE) than Shea who has a injury history as well.

I prefer to call him Manumaleuna because I can pronounce the name with ease and it sounds snazzy rolling off my tongue. Dunno why people can't pronounce his name and claim to have problems with it.

Did I mention Rivers looked good, M3 was a stud, and Cro is my boi?
You might have to fight Leisure to claim "Cro is my boi". :icon_confused:

Just punch him one time in the 'bubble' and that should be the end of it.
