Opening night. Interesting lineup:

1. Tatis, Jr.
2. Machado
3. Pham
4. Profar
5. Hosmer
6. Myers
7. France
8. Mejia
9. Grisham
SP - Paddack

interesting notes:
This is the first time that I recall Manny not batting 3rd for the Padres

Profar hitting cleanup. I wonder what the logic is there?

Mejia starting at catcher. Not a huge surprise as he usually catches for Paddack

France in RF. They’re facing Bumgarner so they look to be platooning France and Naylor in RF.

Play ball!

I like the cardboard cutouts they have in the seats behind home plate and the ambient crowd noise being piped in. Makes it feel a little more normal.

Agreed, I forget sometimes there’s nobody there.

Also, I mistakenly listed Myers at DH. He’s in RF, France is the DH.

The marine layer must be thick tonight. Both Hosmer and Tatis got close.

I wonder how weird it is for the players to be playing in an empty stadium. At home it seems normal mostly.

There were some good things today. The extended at bats showed great discipline at the plate. I thought Profar showed great emotion and sticking him in the 4 spot paid off. The bullpen looked great, they are loaded there. If they get to the 7th with a lead they will be tough to beat.

I'm expecting Paddack to go longer next time. The handcuffs are supposed to be off on everyone this year but I think the first start or two, they're probably keeping the pitch count a little lower.

He got up to 86 pitches and seemed like he could’ve gone another inning if necessary, but yeah I rolled my eyes when they had Strahm warming up earlier. With the 3-1 lead it was probably right to turn it over to the bullpen. If the Padres can play 7 inning games they can make a legitimate run in this shortened season. The offensive game plan tonight was pretty good, a marked contrast from the Andy Green throw mud on the wall approach.

Olivares gets his first Big league hit, a double.

The Padres are working the count at each at bat, they are showing incredible discipline and patience at the plate. Arizona’s pitcher already has a pitch count of 88 after 3 1/3 innings. Damian Easley is the new hitting coach, he must be doing something right.

So are the Dbacks bad, or have the Pads turned the corner this season?

*early obtuse question*

Yes, very early, only game 2, but the Padres are showing great discipline at the plate. Seems like every hitter works the count to 3-2, with a lot of fouled off balls keeping at bats alive. They look like they actually are going in with a legit game plan. The new guys, Pham and Profar, are providing a spark to this team. Manny also looks relaxed this year. And they are touted as having the best bullpen. They may really be legit.

I'm so ready for the roboumps. It's like these umps miss half the balls and strikes now.
Put a roboump behind the plate and add a rover ump in the field to cover home plate plays. Nobody loses a job so their union can’t complain.

Pads win 5-1.

Thanks to Padres home runs (Myers and Machado), free Jumbo Jacks tomorrow at Jack in the Box (with a purchase of a drink).

Nice start to the season Pads! 2-0. Maybe the new manager and batting coach are key. Or playing in front of cardboard fans ? LOL

Welcome back Gilly! Yes, they seem to be making a difference. Easler has definitely been an asset, 15 3-2 counts tonight. That kind of effort will gas the other pitching staff.
yup never saw that last year. Discipline at the plate huge. Myers and Machado with the big bats tonite. Maybe Myers will finally pay off. Young pitchers have a year to mature. Motel seems to have not lost a beat. Good start. But remember last year, so not counting any chickens.

so where did they play this? I didn't watch, just checked the play by play on ESPN. Says Pads home team....is it in AZ where they have spring training?

Petco Park. Every team is playing in their home parks (except Toronto), just no fans. They have cardboard cutouts strategically placed behind home plate, and coupled with TV piped in crowd noise, we at home don’t see much of a difference. The players seem to be playing with the same intensity and enthusiasm.
